Track finds success in Idaho
The UCLA track and field team continued with its early indoor
success as it traveled to Boise State to compete in the United
Heritage Invitational.
The men’s team was led by the distance runners. Nick
Thorton took home first place in 800 meters while Ben Aragon won
the 3000-meter. The Bruins also won the 4×400-meter relay.
Junior thrower Dan Ames headed the field athletes by placing
third in both the weight throw and the shot put.
Freshman sprinter Matt Bruno, one of the victims of last
week’s armed home invasion, apparently had no problem putting
the incident behind him. Bruno finished as the top UCLA athlete in
both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.
The women’s distance runners also took home top honors
with wins in both the one mile and 3000m by Melissa McBain and
Valerie Flores respectively.
Water polo loses tournament
This weekend the No. 2-seeded UCLA women’s water polo team
got their feet wet at the Stanford Invitational.
Drowning their early competitors Hawaii, USC and UC Santa Cruz,
the Bruins faced up with No. 1-seeded Stanford in the championship
game Sunday night.
The Bruins were able to make it a game until the fourth quarter
when the host Cardinal stood its ground and edged UCLA by one goal
4-3.
UCLA is 3-1 in 2003, and will travel to UC Irvine on Wednesday
for an afternoon matchup with the Anteaters.
