Speaks Out

Do you think U.N. weapons inspectors should be given more time
for investigation or did Colin Powell present enough evidence to go
to war now? Sam Rabadi

Fourth-year, physics and math

“I think Colin Powell hasn’t proved that Iraq poses a
substantial threat to the United States. It would be
unreasonable to go to war especially when we are part of the reason
Iraq is holding weapons of mass destruction. It still seems to
be all about oil. I think Bush’s administration is
oil-thirsty.” Jeannie Bimiek

First-year, undeclared

“U.N. inspectors should be given more time because I don’t
think we need to rush into war too quickly when there is a lot at
stake. We should go to war when it isn’t going to be careless, even
if many thought Powell had good reasons.” Josh Abel

Fourth-year, history

“The government knows that Saddam is withholding
evidence so they should take whatever action they deem
appropriate. There seems to be a reason for military presence in
Iraq, even if Powell wasn’t very convincing in his speech. I
think war is a good idea as a last resort.” Daoud Mansour

Second-year, political science

“The U.N. inspectors should be given more time because we
should take any steps necessary to avoid war, despite what reasons
Powell presented. Why risk innocent lives by rushing into a war,
when we can find a peaceful alternative in the meantime?”
Ghesal Amrir

Fourth-year, history

“The lives of innocent people are at stake if we rush into
war, so U.N. inspectors should be given more time to make a deeper
investigation, since I don’t see enough reason from Colin
Powell. There are other countries that have weapons of mass
destruction that we are also ignoring, so why focus only on
Iraq?” Sarah Trubnick

Fourth-year, electrical engineering

“I think the United States government should give U.N.
weapons inspectors more time. I’m not exactly pro-war because
I think it is a pretty extreme measure to risk people’s lives
when we can find better ways of dealing with Saddam and Iraq. I
just think the government needs a better plan.” Compiled by
