Speaks Out

Will you participate in today’s walkout? How effective do
you think it will be? Seena Samimi

Fourth-year, political science

“I am not necessarily pro-war, but I am also not really
anti-war either. I agree with some sort of military action being
taken, but not with the size of full-scale war. I don’t think
I would be the first one to walkout of the classroom, but if there
are a lot of people participating I would probably join them. They
have done a good job of advertising this effort, so I think a lot
of students will take part.” Prat Panda

First-year, psychobiology

“I am against the war, so I plan on walking out of class.
However, I don’t think it will be effective in terms of
affecting Bush’s decisions, because most protests right now
aren’t. Students can make their voices heard and it makes
somewhat of a difference. It makes the world realize that America
as a whole is not committed to this war and it is more about the
government.” Alina Lee

First-year, international economics

“I don’t think I will participate in the walkout. I
understand that college students want to get involved and express
their support against the war but I think walking out of classes
seems more like we are striking against the school or education. I
don’t see how us losing time in our classes will affect
Bush’s decisions about the war.” Ryan Carney

Third-year, mathematics

“I won’t walk out of my class because I don’t
have a solid enough stance against the justifications of going to
war. People protesting doesn’t seem to be affecting
Bush’s decisions, so I don’t think walking out of
classes will be effective. I am glad that people are acting on what
they believe in, but I just don’t think it will have much of
an impact.” Eric Leise

Second-year, economics

“I have been against war from the start, so I plan on
participating in the walkout, even if I think that no form of
protest is effective and this one won’t be any different. Our
generation just doesn’t have the motivation, voice or courage
to speak out.” Prem Adial

Fourth-year, electrical engineering

“I think it will be effective because it demonstrates an
important cause and by participating, people may gain more
awareness. If I had class, I would walk out and I would imagine if
people are aware of the demonstration they will take part as
well.” Photos by Greg Ziolkowski
