Sizgorich exhibits hypocrisy

While it was noble of Rachael Sizgorich to defend free speech in
her column, “Celebrity boycotts act against free
speech” (April 4), it is hypocritical of her to do so only
when she agrees with what is being said.

Those who choose to voice their opinions by creating
“blacklist Web sites” or by boycotting movies or music
should have the same freedom to do so as those who choose to
express themselves in front of millions at the Academy Awards.

If one is in support of free speech, he or she needs to be
consistent and support everyone’s right to free speech.

Jones is childish, disrespectful

How nice that Andrew Jones, chairman of the Bruin Republicans,
recognized the respect with which Code Pink members made public
commentary at the teach-in sponsored by his group. And how sad
that he learned nothing from these women. By referring to Code Pink
members as “creepy old women,” he showed himself to be
immature. It is this disrespectful kind of discourse that has
polluted public debate of vital issues. Why bother to thoughtfully
tackle tough issues when it’s so much easier to resort to
childish insults? Andrew Jones should publicly apologize for
his behavior, and the Bruin Republicans should find a better, more
mature representative to lead them.
