Men’s golf team, Levin lose

The No. 10 UCLA men’s golf team finished 19th out of 19
teams at the ASU Invitational on Sunday.

Overall, it shot an 872 (+8) for the tournament, 48 strokes
behind the winners, Arizona State. The two teams closest to the
Bruins, Colorado and Oregon State, finished tied for 17th with an
862 (-10).

Freshman Spencer Levin made his return to the Bruins after being
suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons. He finished tied
for 102nd out of 104 players with a 228 (+12).

Another reason for the team’s poor performance may have
been the absence of its normal starters. After Levin, the only
golfer who had played in any of the last three tournaments was John
Poucher, who finished 11th with a 208 (-8).

Rounding out the tournament for UCLA was Doug Batty (tied for
71st, 219, +3), Sang-Eun Ji (tied for 78th, 220, +4) and Steve
Jones (tied for 99th, 226, +10).

Men’s track wins Cal-Nevada Title

The UCLA men’s track and field team successfully defended
its Cal-Nevada Title, posting seven individual victories and
racking up 214 points on its way to a first place finish.

The field athletes built on their past success in the pole
vault, jumps and throwing events. Junior Dan Ames won both the shot
put and the discus, throwing 63 feet, .25 inches and 196-0
respectively, while junior Juaune Armon won the long jump with a
season-best mark of 24-11.  Looking to repeat his success from
the record setting April 5th performance at Drake Stadium, Yoo Kim
won the pole vault at 17-0.75, but failed to challenge the 18-foot
mark again.

On the track, sophomore Kyle Erickson won the 400m in
51.72  in his second meet since returning from injury.
Erickson also helped the men’s 4×400-meter relay team to
first place in 3:10.42. Sophomore Jonathan Williams also won the
110 hurdles in 14.40.

The women’s track and field team also had a successful
weekend, taking home second place, despite the fact that less than
half the squad actually competed.

Freshman Chelsea Johnson led the way for the Bruins, posting a
victory in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 13-4.5.

Senior Chaniqua Ross and junior Cari Soong also notched
victories, winning the discus (175-0) and the hammer (208-09),
respectively.

Sophomore Melissa McBain secured UCLA’s final victory of
the day winning the 1500m in 4:43.45.
