Three advance at men’s Pac-10s
Three members of the UCLA men’s tennis team advanced to
the quarterfinals at the Pac-10 Championships held in Ojai,
Calif.
Rodrigo Grilli, the defending champion, won both of his matches
Thursday. In the first round, he defeated Carl Hagman of Arizona
6-3, 6-3. In the second round, the round of 16, Grilli beat Conor
Niland of Cal 6-1, 6-1.
Chris Lam won his first round match 6-1, 6-4 against Christoph
Palmanshofer of Washington. In the round of 16, he beat Manuel Kost
of Oregon, 6-2, 6-2.
Marcin Matkowski won his first round match against Olivier
Charroin of Arizona, 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, he beat Johan
Berg of USC, 6-3, 6-4.
One Bruin did lose. Erfan Djahangiri lost to Pim Van Mele, 6-1,
2-6, 6-4.
Wild pulls upset at Pac-10s
Susi Wild pulled an upset at the women’s tennis Pac-10
Championships for UCLA, beating USC’s Jewel Peterson, the
10th ranked player in the country.
In the second round, Wild fell to Erin Bosclair of Washington,
7-6(3), 7-6(3).
No other Bruin went past the first round. Laura Gordon lost to
Arizona State’s Adria Engel 6-2, 6-1.
Shilpa Joshi lost to Ester Bak of Oregon, 6-4, 6-3. Anya
Loncaric lost to ASU’s Laurn Colalillio 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4.
Women’s golf third after first round of
Pac-10s
The UCLA women’s golf team is in third place after the
first round of the Pac-10 Championships at Corvallis, Ore.
The Bruins tallied a score of 298, ten-over par, six shots
behind the leader, Cal (292, +4). USC is in second place at 294
(+8).
Individually, three Bruins are tied for ninth with a two-over
par 74, including Hana Kim, Charlotte Mayorkas and Susie Mathews.
Melissa Martin is tied for 19th at 76 (+4) and Gina Umeck is tied
for 24th with a 77 (+5).
