WNBA passes on UCLA’s Greco
UCLA senior Michelle Greco will likely play basketball in Italy
or one of the other European leagues next year after she was not
selected in Friday’s WNBA Draft.
Greco, the Pac-10’s leading scorer in 2002-2003, had been
considered a potential first-round pick, but she was passed up
unexpectedly as teams took chances on more risky commodities
including world-class sprinter Marion Jones.
One of the most surprising moments of the draft occurred late in
the third round when the New York Liberty selected former Bruin
Nicole Kaczmarski, who transferred after her freshman year in
2000.
A Long Island native, Kaczmarski was one of the top five
recruits in the nation when she arrived at UCLA, but a mysterious
foot injury has forced her to give up organized basketball for the
past three years.
Although she is reportedly undecided about whether she will
return to the game, the Liberty felt she was worth a look on talent
alone.
Water polo in the NCAA Championship
UCLA was given the at-large bid in the NCAA Women’s Water
Polo Championship Monday.
UCLA (21-4) will face Loyola Marymount (23-8) in the first round
of the tournament on Saturday, May 10. Stanford (20-2) will face
Indiana (26-9) in the other game. The winners will face each other
in the championship game held on Sunday, May 11.
The other three schools qualified by virtue of winning their
conference tournaments. UCLA was given the at-large bid due to
their national No. 1 ranking.
All of the games will be held at La Jolla, Calif. UC San Diego
is the host school.
