The national marbles tournament is entering its 80th year. Boys
and girls up to the age of 15 are eligible, and apparently boys
have flocked across the country to New Jersey every year since 1923
““ except during World War II ““ to compete. The
girls’ tournament began in 1948.
The site offers a hall of fame, a sportsmanship award, a records
for winning percentage, winning streaks, most sticks, and longest
and shortest final.
An excerpt from “Marble Stories,” a link on the
tournament Web site, reads: “I have participated in a lot of
different athletic activities since then ““ football,
lacrosse, even professional wrestling ““ but this marble
tournament is still the biggest thrill I ever had in
sports.”
