Women’s Golf in ninth at NCAAs
The UCLA women’s golf team compiled a second consecutive
round of 26 over par to leave them at 52 over par and in ninth
place at the NCAA Championships in Indiana.
USC leads the 24-team field at 32 over par, three shots clear of
second-place team Oklahoma State.
Wednesday’s round featured more favorable conditions that
led to a two-shot drop in the overall scoring average from 81 to
79. However, the Bruins were not able to capitalize in
their second round, and are considerably behind USC with only two
rounds remaining.
Sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas, tied for seventh after a
first-round 75, most likely saw her shot to become the individual
champion vanish with an 83 in the second round that left her tied
for 48th place at 14 over par.
Junior Hana Kim jumped from being tied for 23rd place into a tie
for 17th place, shooting a three-over-par 75, the low-Bruin round
on Wednesday. Kim is only six shots back of individual leader
Annie Thurman of Oklahoma State.
Susie Mathews is tied for 21st place at 10 over par overall. She
shot a 78 in Wednesday’s second round.
Phaler allowed to scope out schools
UCLA basketball signee Sean Phaler received permission from Ben
Howland to talk to several schools including New Mexico earlier
this week.
The 6-foot-8-inch forward from Villa Park High was told last
week by Howland that he would not see much playing time as a Bruin
due to his lack of size. Howland has given the recruit a chance to
opt out of his scholarship, and he will be allowed to explore his
options with any other school that is interested in him.
Phaler averaged almost 19 points a game for Villa Park last
season.
Scates honored for coaching
UCLA men’s volleyball head coach Al Scates was recognized
Thursday in Minneapolis by USA Volleyball as a 75th Anniversary
All-Era coach.
Scates led the USA men’s National Team from 1971-72. The
1971 team earned silver medals at the Pan American Games and
NORCECA championships.
It is the second award Scates will receive in a week, as he took
home the UCLA Alumni Association Award for Professional Achievement
last Saturday.
