AEG awaits word on bid for NCAA
Championships

The Anschutz Entertainment Group will finally learn the fate of
its proposal to bring the NCAA Outdoor Championships
to Southern California when the NCAA track and field
committee holds it annual meeting in Indianapolis next week.

The bid, which is co-sponsored by UCLA, USC and Long Beach
State, would use the newly built Home Depot Center in Carson as the
host site for the event from 2005 to 2007.

The committee will also review plans submitted by Oregon, Texas,
Louisiana State, Ohio State and 2003 host site Sacramento, but
AEG’s Rich Perelman is confident that his bid has the most to
offer.

“The big difference between our plan and the others is
that the NCAAs would be a part of whole spring slate of track and
field,” said Perelman, who was in Sacramento for this
year’s championships in order to drum up support for the
proposal. “We should be one of the major
candidates.”

Johnson sets personal record in Palo Alto

After a disappointing performance in Sacramento, Chelsea Johnson
rebounded at the USA Outdoor Championships on Saturday in Palo
Alto.

The UCLA freshman established a new personal record in the pole
vault, clearing the bar on her second attempt at 13-feet, 11.25
inches. That vault was enough to secure ninth place for Johnson,
the top collegiate finisher.

Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila won the competition clearing
the bar at 14-9 on her first attempt.

Men’s track at USA Outdoors

Four UCLA men’s track and field athletes competed in the
USA Outdoor Championships.

Leading the Bruins was junior Juaune Armon. He finished 12th in
the long jump at 24-7.75. The event was won by Nike athlete Dwight
Phillips with his jump of 27-0.5.

Also competing was senior Kyle Erickson in the 400m hurdles.
Erickson advanced to the semifinals where he ran 50.99, but failed
to qualify for the finals. Senior John Barbieri also participated
in the 400m hurdles, running 51.59 in the preliminaries, but did
not advance to the semifinals.

In the Junior division, freshman Matthew Willis competed in the
400m hurdles. In Saturday’s preliminaries, he ran 53.80.

In the finals late Sunday evening, he placed third with a time
of 51.89.

Football to practice in Fullerton

The UCLA football team announced they will practice at Cal State
Fullerton from Aug. 16-23, with a scrimmage on Aug. 23.

All practices are open to the public.

Last year, the team practiced for a week at Cal Lutheran, but
the facilities there were not available due to a scheduling
conflict this year.

The team will report to UCLA on Aug. 12 to begin camp. The
season begins on Sept. 6 when the Bruins open up at Colorado.

the match play Western Amateur Championship in Urbana, Ill. and

Prange 5 & 4.

In Thursday’s second round, Dwyer beat Nevada’s Erin
Long 6 & 5 and beat Bucknell’s Jaclyn Sanders 1-up on
Wednesday.
