The only clear justification Dang provides in his column
“Terminator star a viable replacement for Davis,” (July
14) for recalling Gov. Davis is that journalists will be able write
snappy puns based on Schwarzenegger films. Yes, California has an
enormous deficit. Yes, this shortfall will squeeze us as UC
students. But Dang, like the well-heeled Republican backers of the
effort to recall Davis, has not linked these problems with
Davis’ policies.
I’m no fan of Davis. The guy is a platform for more
special interests groups than Bruin Walk. Still, this recall effort
is entirely political. A Republican by the name of Darrell Issa is
pretty much single-handedly funding the campaign to recall Davis.
He has paid more than one million dollars to professional
signature-gathering companies in exchange for all the signatures
needed to get the recall approved.
The recall effort is not, as Dang implies, the result of
Californian dissatisfaction with Davis ““ although it has
surely hurt his otherwise ho-hum popularity. It’s deceptive
and disgusting. Issa has announced his plans to run for the
possible vacancy. Issa is essentially purchasing a shot at the
governor’s mansion with his money.
