To-be freshman commits to UCLA

Teen hoops sensation Taylor King, who will be a freshman at
Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana this year, has verbally
committed to coming to UCLA.

Despite not having entered high school yet, King, 6-6, is
considered to be one of the top young prospects in the country and
has shown his skills at many summer camps including ABCD, the Big
Time and Best of Summer.

UCLA’s Nossmy tops personal best

UCLA track and field recruit Philip Nossmy posted a personal
best mark of 13.55 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles at an event in
Malmo, Sweden on Aug. 12.

The Swedish standout, who took first place by more than
two-tenths of a second, could play a huge role for the Bruins next
season. If he is able to get his student visa in time for the
season, Nossmy could be a contender in the event at the NCAA meet
in June.

A mark of 13.55 seconds would have placed him in fourth in
2003.

Former Bruins called to majors

Former Bruin Garrett Atkins was called up from the minors by the
Colorado Rockies on Aug. 3 and made his major league debut that
day. The third-baseman has played in nine games since, starting
five, and has five hits in 25 at bats with two RBI.

Chase Utley, who made his major league debut for the
Philadelphia Phillies back on Apr. 4, was sent back to the minors
in May and was recalled to the major leagues on Aug. 14.

In the three games the second baseman has played since, he has
gone 4-for-10 with two RBI.

Kicker Fikse fails to make the cut

Former UCLA kicker Nate Fikse was released by the San Francisco
49ers on Saturday. He missed his only field goal attempt, a
40-yarder, in last week’s preseason game against the Kansas
City Chiefs.
