Speaks out

How closely do you follow the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and
do you think it is important to follow big international issues?
Stephanie Reid

First-year, music
“I think it’s important to keep up with it. I
haven’t really read anything recently because I’ve been
busy, but I think it’s important to keep up with what your
country is doing and what other countries are
doing.”

Saul Baeza

Third-year, English
“I’m kind of indifferent about it; I don’t really
know enough about it to have an opinion. You are asking the wrong
person. I guess it doesn’t really affect me ““
it’s not really close to home. I know it’s a big thing,
with two religions fighting in the Holy Land, but I think we
shouldn’t really be involved in it.”

Shannon Safino

First-year, undeclared
“I don’t follow the news very closely, and when I do,
it’s when it’s on and I happen to hear about it. I
don’t really follow much of the news in general. The Middle
East conflict affects a lot of students, so it’s probably
good for other students to know about it so they can know why other
students are possibly affected by it.”

Viki Marras

Third-year, anthropology and
communications

“I do care about the situation, but I wouldn’t say I
follow the news about it. I think the news is really biased. So
most of the stuff I know about (the situation) I read from books or
talks (with) teachers. “¦ I think the news has a really right
bias. I think we hear more about Israel than we hear about
Palestine ““ we hear about the Palestinian terrorists and how
everyone is bad. I think it’s mostly from the point of view
of Israel.”

Anthony Atalla

Third-year, history
“I used to follow it a lot, and I think it’s very
important, but the reason I kind of stopped following it is because
we don’t have cable so it’s really hard to follow
sports, news or anything even though I like to. Sometimes I look it
up on the Internet. I hear about the big stuff even though I
don’t follow it on a normal basis.”

Yolanda Valdivia

Second-year, history
“Well, I follow what I hear on the news, and usually, the
news, to me, doesn’t really give the full story and only
gives one side. I think it’s important to hear both sides of
the story because it in some way affects us ““ family members,
our economy, etc. And I think it’s really important to know
what is going on so we can make sound decisions.”

Vivienne Lau

Third-year, economics
“I don’t pay attention at all. I just came from Hong
Kong, and in Hong Kong, people don’t pay much attention to
U.S. affairs or Palestine. (In general) I think war is
unnecessary.”
