Speaks out

Have the budget cuts affected anything at UCLA that you’ve
noticed? Have you been affected by the fee increase? Tami
Vuong Third-year, English

“It hasn’t really affected me directly, but a lot of
my friends have to pay their own fees and are worried about how to
cover the costs.”

Debbie Huang First-year, psychology

“I’ve paid a lot more in student fees. It’s a
problem because my parent’s are in the middle range, and we
don’t qualify for financial aid. But we can’t really
afford to pay the full amount and go to school
here.”

Eric Garthoffner Third-year, computer
science

“Personally, I haven’t felt the burden, but I hear
about it from a lot of other people. You hear stuff about the
rosters possibly having to be squeezed, but I haven’t noticed
anything as a direct result of the budget cuts.”

Ashley Ellefson First-year, English

“Not personally that I’ve noticed. I’m a
first-year, so I don’t know what it was like before. I
don’t like (the fee increase), but at the same time, you
can’t change it. You just have to roll with
it.”

Grant Sanders First-year, microbiology

“Not that I’ve noticed, but I know that fees have
gone up, and it’s harder for me to pay for my classes.
It’s putting a big hole in my wallet because I have to work a
lot more.”
