Local product Shipp commits to UCLA

Josh Shipp, one of the best shooting guard prospects on the West
Coast, has committed to attend UCLA next fall according to
recruiting guru Rick Kimbrel of BruinBlitz.com.

“I just sat down with my family and discussed the
situation,” said local product Shipp, who attends Fairfax
High in Los Angeles. “After I thought about it I wanted to
stay close to home so my family and friends could see me
play.”

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard Shipp, brother of former Cal
standout Joe Shipp, rose to prominence over the summer after
performing well at the Nike camp in particular. UCLA is believed to
have offered Shipp a scholarship once it became clear that Ohio
product Malik Hairston would not be coming to Westwood.

Shipp, Ben Howland’s fourth local commitment since taking
over at UCLA last spring, chose the Bruins over Oregon, Washington,
Stanford, and Boston College.

MEN’S TENNIS:

Legendary Stanford men’s tennis coach Dick Gould announced
his retirement Thursday, after guiding the Cardinal to 17 NCAA
Championships in his 37 seasons as head coach.

The retirement is effective after the 2003-04 season.

Gould will stay with the program as the director of tennis. His
17 NCAA Championships are second, among all NCAA coaches, to UCLA
men’s volleyball head coach Al Scates’ 18 titles.

“I’m not totally shocked by his decision, but
we’re losing the greatest and winningest coach in the history
of collegiate tennis,” UCLA coach Billy Martin said.
“He will certainly be missed. I’ve loved the
rivalry.”

Gould’s all-time record is 757-140, and his record in the
NCAA postseason is 85-10. Players he’s coached include John
McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.

Current Stanford men’s tennis associate head coach John
Whitlinger will take over for Gould after the season. Whitlinger
has been with the program for 18 years.

MEN’S GOLF:

John Poucher, a member of the UCLA men’s golf team, was
named National Amateur of the Month by the Southern Golf
Association Thursday.

Poucher won his first collegiate golf tournament on Sept. 23,
when he won the Fall Preview at Virginia Tech over a nationally
ranked field with a 36-hole score of 138.

“John winning that tournament was the best thing that
could’ve happened to this team,” UCLA coach O.D.
Vincent said after the Fall Preview.

Poucher’s other September highlights include a tie for
13th place at the Inverness Invitational at the University of
Toledo (Sept. 19-20), and a tie for eighth place at the Husky
Invitational (Sept. 29-30).

Other nominees for the award included Georgia Southern’s
Aron Price and Sam Saunders, the 15-year old grandson of Arnold
Palmer.

MEN’S SOCCER:

UCLA sophomore defender Jordan Harvey was selected to Soccer
America’s Team of the Week for games played Sept. 21-28. He
was credited for an assist on UCLA’s game-winning goal
against LMU. The game was the Bruins’ fourth consecutive
shutout.

Harvey is also a member of the Under-20 U.S. National Team, and
was called for training camp in preparation for the team’s
match against Japan on Oct. 8.
