After posting career bests in kills in back-to-back nights,
junior middle blocker Brynn Murphy was named
Pac-10 Player of the Week. Murphy posted 43 kills in two matches,
to go along with 16 digs and two aces in victories against
Washington State and No. 13 Washington. Murphy carried the Bruins
offensively, hitting a solid .268 for the weekend, whereas the rest
of her teammates combined to hit only .166. “I was in
Ackerman when I heard. It’s an honor; I was shocked,”
Murphy said. “I did have two career nights back to back, so
it was nice that (the Pac-10) recognized it.” Murphy has been
the best offensive player for UCLA all season, and she attributes
her strong start to the year to her offseason participation in
beach volleyball. “I basically lived on the beach,” she
said. “It’s the best thing for your game; it helps you
in all aspects, even defense.”
MEN’S TENNIS: UCLA men’s tennis
players Tobias Clemens, a senior, and junior
Chris Lam will be participating in the 2003 Icy
Hot/ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Chattanooga,
Tenn. The tournament, which runs Oct. 9-12, is the first of three
national championship events held during the 2003-2004 collegiate
tennis season. In the preseason individual rankings released Sept.
3, Clemens is ranked No. 3 in the country (980 votes) while Lam is
No. 29 (721 votes). The players left today for Tennessee.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Former UCLA assistant
coach Gerald Madkins was hired by the NBA’s
New York Knicks as a scout Monday. Madkins coached at UCLA for the
last two years under Steve Lavin and was not
retained by new coach Ben Howland.
ELSEWHERE: San Diego State announced the hiring
of Mike Bohn as athletic director Monday. Bohn
replaces Gene Bartow, who was the UCLA men’s
basketball coach from 1975-1977. Bartow was only the interim
athletic director, as he had replaced Rick Bay in
May. Bay resigned in May after a California State University
auditor issued a report critical of the department. Bohn has been
the athletic director at Idaho for five years.
