Cross country teams to run in top invitational
Both the UCLA men’s and women’s cross country teams
will compete at the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday. The
meet, hosted by Northern Iowa, will have 23 of the top 30
women’s teams in the country competing and seven of the top
10 men’s teams. Running for the No. 12 UCLA women’s
team will be seniors Valerie Flores and
Melissa McBain, junior Carmen
Winant, sophomores Jenna Timinsky,
Allison Hall and Sarah West,
redshirt freshman Ashley Caldwell and freshman
Alison Costello. “I’m happy with how
our team has been running and developing,” men’s and
women’s coach Eric Peterson said in a press release.
“Our younger athletes have responded well when given the
opportunity to contribute.” Last Saturday, the Bruin
“B” team won the Triton Classic, led by Winant, who
finished fourth individually. The men’s team will be
competing at full strength for the first time all season, with
juniors Ben Aragon, Erik Emilsson
and Jon Rankin all available. Also running are
sophomores Martell Munguia and Mohammed
Qazi and redshirt freshmen Chad
Galbreath, Austin Ramos and Micky
Cobrin.
HOCKEY: The UCLA hockey team will host
California tonight and Saturday at the HealthSouth Training Center
in El Segundo. Tonight’s game, the opener of the Pac-8
season, will be at 8 p.m. while Saturday’s game will be at
8:15 p.m. The team is currently 0-2.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: UCLA volunteer
assistant Jeff Nygaard and partner Dain
Blanton defeated the German team of Markus
Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann 21-19,
21-16 Thursday to get them into the Round of 16 at the FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Championship in Rio de Janeiro. Australian
Mark Williams ““ who last played for UCLA in
2001 ““ also moved on, with his partner Julien
Prosser, with a 19-21, 21-19, 15-12 win over
Richard de Kogel and Sander
Mulder of the Netherlands.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Arizona State guard

of a knee injury suffered Wednesday. Noe, a 5-foot-10 sophomore and
a Pac-10 Conference All-Freshman selection last year, tore the
