Women’s squad finishes fifth, men place 17th at
Northern Iowa

The UCLA women’s cross country team finished fifth and the
men’s team finished 17th at the Pre-National Invitational
hosted by Northern Iowa on Saturday.

The nation’s top women’s and men’s teams
competed at the meet, and the course is also the site for the
upcoming 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 24.

The No. 12 women’s team finished with 173 points. No. 2
Stanford won the race with 66 points.

Individually, the women’s team was led by senior Valerie
Flores, who placed eighth in the

6000-meter race with a time of 20 minutes, 31 seconds. UCLA had
two other runners in the top 30, including freshman Alison Costello
(24th, 21:03) and redshirt freshman Ashley Caldwell (26th, 21:06).
The winner of the race was Stanford’s Alicia Craig
(19:52.6).

The men finished with 443 points. Stanford won the meet with 25
points.

Individually for the men, freshman Austin Ramos, placed 41st
with a time of 24:20. Jon Rankin finished 54th with a time of
24:29. The individual winner of the Purple Race was Brigham
Young’s Kipi Kangogo (23:09.8).

HOCKEY: The Bruins fell to

0-4 this season after back to back losses to UC Berkeley 10-1
and 3-2 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. This marks the second
time in the young season that the Bears (2-2) have tallied 10
goals.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: UCLA recruit Candice
Wiggins is expected to announce her college destination early next
week. The La Jolla Country Day standout took her official visit to
Duke this past weekend and will travel to Stanford next weekend
before making her decision.

Charde Houston, another potential UCLA recruit, will visit
Connecticut next weekend and is expected to announce her decision
soon afterward.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: UCLA volunteer
assistant coach Jeff Nygaard and Dain Blanton lost 21-18, 18-21,
16-14 to the Portuguese team of Joao Brenha and Luis Maia in the
quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship on
Friday in Rio de Janeiro.

Dax Holdren and UCLA alumnus Stein Metzger represented the top
American team, losing in the final

21-18, 21-15 to Brazil’s Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and
Emanuel Rego on Sunday.
