Globetrotters pick up former Bruin standout

Former Bruin basketball player Darrick Martin
is now a member of the Harlem Globetrotters. Martin lettered at
UCLA from 1989-1992. He ranks third in career assists in UCLA
history and fifth in steals. Following his UCLA career, Martin
spent seven years in the NBA, most recently playing for the
Sacramento Kings in 2000-2001. “We are pleased with the team
we have put together this year. There were some difficult player
cuts due to the increased number of players that tried out during
training camp,” Globetrotter owner and chairman
Mannie Jackson said in a statement.

MEN’S SOCCER: UCLA forward Matt
Taylor
won a player-of-the-week award for the second time
this week when he was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Tuesday.
The senior was given College Soccer News’ National Player of
the Week Award on Monday. In last weekend’s games against
California and Stanford, Taylor tallied three goals and two
assists.

MEN’S GOLF: Four UCLA players competed as
individuals at the Bill Cullum/Countrywide Intercollegiates, hosted
at Wood Ranch Country Club by Cal State Northridge. After
Tuesday’s final round, freshman Chris Heintz
ended up with the lowest Bruin score with a 3-over par: 219.
Freshman Yoakim Renstrom shot a 220, sophomore
Breene Murphy shot a 221 and Peter
Campbell
finished with a 222. This group will compete as
individuals at the Santa Clara Invitational, Oct. 26-28 at the
Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The UCLA men’s
basketball team will hold walk-on tryouts on Oct. 26, at 3:30 p.m.
in Pauley Pavilion. To qualify to participate, you must be a
full-time student with proof of a recent physical examination and
health insurance.
