National Take Affirmative Action Day
declared
Students across the United States today will take part in
demonstrations, rallies and other activities to show support for a
newly declared day dedicated to promoting affirmative action.
Students and representatives from the United States Students
Association, the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People Youth & College Division and the Americans for a
Fair Chance/Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund
will hold a press conference today in Washington, D.C. declaring
Oct. 30 National Take Affirmative Action Day.
The new affirmative action day will give students a chance to
show their commitment to affirmative action to increase diversity
in higher education settings.
The creation of National Take Affirmative Action Day follows a
June U.S. Supreme Court decision in which justices upheld a
University of Michigan admissions policy that used race as a factor
in admissions decisions.
