UCLA awaits decision of top prep basketball player;
women’s volleyball victorious San Diego High
standout Charde Houston, one of the nation’s
top prep basketball players, could make her college decision as
early as today. The 6-foot-2-inch forward has narrowed her choices
down to four finalists ““ Connecticut, Texas, Duke and UCLA
““ but would not indicate a favorite. Houston, who attended
Saturday’s women’s basketball exhibition game against
Love and Basketball wearing a gray UCLA sweatshirt, averaged 35.6
ppg last season and is the first player in her section’s
history to have multiple 1,000-point scoring seasons. She is a
gifted scorer and rebounder, and would fit right into UCLA’s
lineup at one of the forward positions in 2004. “I
don’t care if I have to be down low or up high,”
Houston said Saturday. “I’m all about the team
winning.”
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The UCLA

freshman Colby Lyman with 11.5 points, including
nine kills, two service aces and a block assist. Brynn
Murphy ended with 10.5 points before leaving with an
injury. Junior Chrissie Zartman had 20 digs in the
match to give her 1,200 for her career, which ranks her fourth on
UCLA’s all-time list. The Bruins host Stanford on Thursday
and California on Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

Clemens defeated teammate Chris Lam, 6-3,
6-2, in the finals of the Southern California Intercollegiates held
Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Club. Clemens, the

championship he won last year. After the singles match was over,

8-0, from UCLA sophomores Chris Surapol and
Aaron Yovan. The team’s regular season
begins Jan. 14, when the Bruins host UC Irvine.

Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush
beat UCLA’s Jackie Carleton and
Lauren Fisher 8-6 on Saturday in the doubles final
of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
MEN’S GOLF: Arizona State beat the UCLA
men’s golf team 4-1 in the consolation semifinals of the
Collegiate Match Play Championships. Senior Roy
Moon beat Alejandro Canizares, last
year’s NCAA individual champion, but was the only Bruin to
win his match.
HOCKEY: The UCLA men’s ice hockey team
lost both of its matches at home against Washington over the
weekend, 7-6 (3-2 shootout) on Friday and 8-5 on Saturday. The
