Men's soccer collects at Pac-10 awards

MEN’S SOCCER: UCLA swept the Pac-10
awards, which were announced Thursday by Pac-10 commissioner Tom
Hansen. Senior forward Matt Taylor was named Pac-10 Player of the
Year, freshman forward Chad Barrett was Co-Freshman of the Year and
Tom Fitzgerald was Coach of the Year. Taylor led the conference in
scoring, with 13 goals. He also recorded seven assists. Barrett
ranked second on the team in scoring with nine goals and eight
assists. In Fitzgerald’s second year at the helm of the UCLA
program, the team posted a perfect 10-0 record in the conference,
the first ever team to do so. The Bruins also received the No. 1
seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the
school’s history. Along with Taylor, defenders Leonard
Griffin and Brandon Owens, midfielder Adolfo Gregorio and
goalkeeper Zach Wells were named to the conference’s first
team. Midfielders Ty Maurin and Aaron Lopez were named to the
second team, as was Barrett. Dru Hoshimiya was an honorable mention
selection.

SWIMMING: The No. 11 UCLA swimming and diving
team will compete at the Texas A&M Invitational in College
Station this weekend. The Bruins are 4-1, 2-1 Pac-10.

FOOTBALL: Senior cornerback Keith Short was
named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team. Sophomore fullback
J.D. Groves was an honorable mention All-Academic selection.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: UCLA coach Stella Sampras
Webster announced the signing of three recruits to letters of
intent Thursday. They are Riza Zalameda of Los Angeles, Tracy Lin
of Anaheim, and Elizabeth Lumpkin of Naperville, Ill. All three are
currently ranked in the top-30 nationally in the USTA Girls’
18s rankings.
