Speaks out

How do you feel about the nonunionized status of Wal-Mart, and
will you continue to shop there? David Ha

Third-year, psychobiology
“I support unions, and I believe that stores that are
un-unionized like Wal-Mart are hurting unionized stores like
Ralph’s. Forcing stores like Ralph’s to close is
hurting us because people like us are the workers.”

Kieulia Blackmon

First-year, astrophysics
“Well, $6.75 is a little low for what the people are doing at
Wal-Mart. They should be making at least $7.00 or $7.50 an hour,
but everyone has to start out somewhere.”

Erich Agana

Fourth-year, microbiology, immunology and molecular
genetics and history

“You try not to do business with that type of corporation,
but we are students, and we have to pick the most economically
feasible choice. In a sense, it is a necessary
evil.”

Pia Roy

Fourth-year, political science
“They don’t allow their workers to unionize, but so
many people are being influenced by their presence, so many people
are getting jobs, and it stimulates the economy. It doesn’t
bother me (that they don’t unionize) “¦ if that’s
what they want to do (as a company).”
