Men’s hockey sweeps Stanford in 2 games
The UCLA men’s hockey team broke a five-game losing streak
this weekend, sweeping two home games over Stanford (13-5, 8-3).
UCLA improved their overall record to 6-14. More importantly, they
kept their slim playoff hopes alive by raising their Pac-8 record
to 5-9, good enough for fifth in the conference. The Bruins need
two wins over Cal in Berkeley next weekend to scratch their way
into fourth place, which would qualify them for the Pac-8 Playoffs
in Washington.
ALUMNI: Adam Wright, a member of the UCLA
men’s water polo team from 1996-2000, scored a goal for the
U.S. national team in the squad’s 7-6 win over No. 2 Italy on
Saturday at the Torneo di Napoli in Naples, Italy. The U.S. is
ranked No. 6 in the world and improved to 1-1 in round-robin
tournament play.
NOTRE DAME REUNION: At halftime during
Kentucky’s 71-63 win at Notre Dame, the 1974 Fighting Irish
team that stopped UCLA’s NCAA record 88-game winning streak
was honored.
FOOTBALL: Senior quarterback prospect Patrick
Cowan committed to UCLA on Friday, according to
BruinReportOnline.com. “I wasn’t really being recruited
until late,” Cowan said. “It was mostly Idaho, and then
Arizona, and then UCLA. In a way, it’s kind of surprising.
But things happen for a reason, I think.” Cowan gives UCLA a
possible family connection; his older brother Joe is currently a
freshman wide receiver. That combination may be some years away,
however. At 6’4″, 197 lbs. and just starting his senior
year at St. John Bosco High, Patrick is seen as a long-term
project. “I’m just really excited about going to
UCLA,” he said. “I’m just going to really try to
learn the offense and do my best and see what happens.”
