A gas leak related to construction on the site of the future
residence hall Rieber North forced hundreds of students to evacuate
on the Hill Thursday.

University police received a call about the leak around 10:30
a.m. Because of the wind’s blowing fumes toward Hedrick Hall,
students were evacuated from the building shortly after the leak
began.

University police sectioned off De Neve Drive from the edge of
the Saxon Suites to the back of Hedrick. Police said utility
workers arrived and fixed the broken pipe. Students were not
allowed back into Hedrick until about 12:15 p.m.

Hedrick’s dining hall was closed for lunch due to the
leak, but the restaurant reopened for dinner. UCLA Dining Services
employees said the customer flow at other residential restaurants
was heavier than usual.

The road closures forced students living in the Hitch Suites to
go around the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center to access their
buildings.

Reports from Bruin Staff.
