The fourth-ranked UCLA men’s tennis team (14-5, 2-1
Pac-10) takes to the road today to face Oregon in the first of two
matches in the Pacific Northwest. The Bruins then face Washington
on Saturday. This road trip should give the Bruins little trouble.
Oregon (9-7, 1-3) is currently posted down near the bottom of the
conference, and UCLA has never lost to the Ducks. No. 19 Washington
(13-6, 3-1) is 1-18 all-time against the Bruins.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Omar Wilkes, son of
former UCLA great Jamaal Wilkes, announced he is leaving Kansas at
the end of the semester Thursday, raising the possibility that he
could follow in his father’s footsteps and go to UCLA. The
Los Angeles native nearly committed to UCLA a year ago. “Omar
has made a decision to transfer back closer to home,” Kansas
coach Bill Self said in a press release. “I really believe he
is going to be an excellent college basketball player.
Unfortunately for Kansas, it will now happen on the West
Coast.” Wilkes, one of the nation’s top prep combo
guards in 2002, played sparingly as a Jayhawk, averaging just 3.5
minutes per contest. UCLA is currently recruiting Detroit prep
phenom Malik Hairston. If the Bruins were to sign him, they would
not have a scholarship free until after next season.
SOONG WINS: Cari Soong threw a meet-record 209
feet, 2 inches in taking first place in the women’s hammer
throw competition Thursday at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie
Joyner-Kersee Invitational. Junior Jessica Cosby took third place
with a 192-foot, 6-inch heave. In the men’s competition,
senior Dan Ames took second place with a regional-qualifying mark
of 199-11. The open portion of the meet will take place today, with
the elite competition scheduled for Saturday.
