In front of a record crowd lining the 2,000 meter course, the
UCLA women’s rowing team placed third at the 35th annual
Opening Day Regatta. The 40,000 spectators were the largest crowd
the Bruins will race in front of this year. The Bruins finished 16
seconds behind first-place Washington and 10 seconds behind the
second-place Italian National Team for the Windermere Cup. They
crossed the finish line with a 6:48.56 mark. The event marked the
end of the regular season for the Bruins, who will finish by racing
in the Pac-10 Championships on May 16 in Rancho Cordova.
VOLLEYBALL: BYU won the MPSF Championship by
defeating Long Beach State 3-1 on Saturday night in Provo, Utah.
The first-seeded Cougars earned an automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament. The Bruins lost to LBSU, 3-0, Thursday night in the
semifinal.
WATER POLO: USC defeated Stanford 8-7 in the
finals of the MPSF Championships. The win qualified the Trojans for
the NCAA Tournament, while the Cardinal will more than likely earn
the at-large berth despite the loss. Only four teams from three
conferences qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins lost to the
Cardinal 3-2 in the semifinal.
