Students who had the opportunity to see legendary
singer-songwriter James Taylor perform a few of his greatest hits
on Friday night should consider themselves lucky. And, they should
thank the Student Alumni Association.
On a campus that rarely unites around anything, it was
comforting to see that students could, in fact, celebrate something
together ““ even if it was just good music.
Absent the torrential rain that drenched last year’s
performances, Friday’s clear skies provided an environment
for a multitude of talent to shine. On stage and off, that talent
was impressive. So was the student body’s support.
The company’s occasional commentary ““ from snides
about Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed fee hikes to a
hilarious song parody, titled “Where is the Gap?”
““Â put an oft-missing entertaining spin on many of the
issues discussed across campus ““ and in this newspaper
““ everyday.
The onstage performers proved how much musical talent exists on
this campus. It’s too bad that only 16 of the 80 groups that
auditioned got a chance to perform.
Behind the scenes, the 16 members of the Spring Sing Executive
Committee should also be commended. They dedicated months of their
lives to this event, and it showed.
In a better world, events like this would come around more
often.
