Bruin joins Soccer Hall of Fame Former UCLA
star Paul Caligiuri was elected to the National
Soccer Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Caligiuri will be inducted along
with Eric Wynalda and Michelle Akers October 9 to 11 at the Hall of
Fame in Oneonta, NY. Wynalda and Caligiuri will be the first two
former players of Major League Soccer to enter the Hall. Currently
coaching at Cal Poly Pomona, Caligiuri first gained fame for a goal
he scored against Trinidad and Tobago that put the United States in
the World Cup for the first time in 40 years. He started all seven
matches for the United States in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and
played all but 18 minutes. Professionally, he played six years in
the MLS and was one of the first Americans to play in the German
Bundesliga. As a Bruin, Caligiuri was an NCAA All-American in 1985
and ’86 and led UCLA to its first soccer title in 1985. In
1997, he was inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame.

FOOTBALL: Los Altos High School running
back/defensive back Daniel Drayton, who made an
oral commitment to UCLA but had to withdraw due to academic issues,
recently signed a letter of intent to attend Oregon State,
according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. The Tribune named
Drayton its Co-Player of the Year in 2002 and a first team,
all-area member last year.

TENNIS: The NCAA announced its Division I
men’s and women’s individual tournament selections on
Thursday. UCLA’s Tobias Clemens is the
singles No. 7 seed and Ljuben Pampoulov is the
first alternate. On the doubles side, two UCLA pairs made the draw
““ Alberto Francis and Kris
Kwinta
and Philipp Gruendler and
Pampoulov. For the women, Daniela Bercek and
Jackie Carleton both were at-large selections for
singles play. In doubles, Bercek and Lauren Fisher
are in, while Carleton and Feriel Esseghir are
first alternates. The men’s singles and doubles championships
will be May 26-31 and the women’s will be May 24-29.
