UCLA pole vaulter to compete against Olympic hopefuls in invitational

UCLA sophomore Chelsea Johnson will compete
against a world-class field in the women’s pole vault this
weekend at the Home Depot Invitational in Carson, Calif. Senior
thrower Lara Saye will join Johnson despite
redshirting the outdoor season. Among those expected to vie for the
top spot in the pole vault include U.S. Olympic hopefuls
Stacy Dragila, Mary Sauer and
former UCLA great Tracy O’Hara. Dragila, the
American record-holder, is the only vaulter in the competition
other than Johnson who has ever eclipsed 15 feet. Johnson is coming
off a second-place finish in last weekend’s Pac-10
Championships.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Stanford men’s
basketball coach Mike Montgomery appears set to
take over the coaching position of the Golden State Warriors. A
Pac-10 source speaking on the condition of anonymity told The
Associated Press that Montgomery had taken the job. He would
replace Eric Musselman, who was fired Wednesday
after just two seasons with Golden State. If he does indeed take
the Warriors position, Montgomery would leave behind 18 years with
a Stanford program that he has boosted to national prominence. The
Cardinal made a second-round NCAA Tournament exit last season,
despite their third No. 1 seed in five years, after posting a 29-1
regular-season mark. Montgomery has a career record of 547-244,
which includes eight seasons at Montana.

FOOTBALL: Andy Carroll, a
former Washington wide receiver and special teams player, is suing
the NCAA, claiming the organization is violating anti-trust laws by
limiting the number of scholarships that can be awarded. With the
lawsuit, Carroll is seeking to end the restriction on the number of
football scholarships a Division I-A institution can award.
Currently, the NCAA limits the number of scholarship players to
85.
