Football: Former Bruin pleads no contest

In a Los Angeles courthouse Wednesday, former UCLA linebacker
Xavier Burgess pleaded no contest to one count of disturbing the
peace, City Attorney Frank Mateljan said.

Burgess was arrested in late October for threatening a UCLA
parking enforcement officer. He originally faced more substantial
charges but arrived at a plea bargain.

In his court appearance Wednesday, Burgess’ sentencing was
suspended for one-year, during which time he is to attend a
high-level anger management class and is not to have any contact
with the victim. If he successfully completes both tasks, the
charges will be dismissed.

After serving several suspensions from the football team for
violating team policies, Burgess has recently left UCLA after being
dismissed for academic reasons.

As a highly touted recruit out of Sacramento’s Grant Union
High School, Burgess redshirted the 2002 season and did not see
much playing time in 2003.
