UCLA men’s volleyball coach Al Scates has been named to
the Association of United Wallyball Players advisory staff. Scates,
who created the first set of wallyball rules 25 years ago, will be
part of the coaching staff for the USWA National High School
Wallyball program. Former UCLA volleyball All-American’s
Karch Kiraly and Linda Hanley are also on the staff. Wallyball
takes aspects of the game of volleyball and is played in a
racquetball court with 2, 3 or 4 players.
MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD: After winning the
400-meter hurdles at the U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships
last weekend, freshman Brandon Johnson will now head to the World
Junior Championships. Both Johnson and Florida’s Kerron
Clement automatically gained an invitation to the Championships,
held July 13-18 in Grosetto, Italy, as the two top finishers.
Johnson ran 49.59-seconds to secure the victory last
weekend.
SOFTBALL: Anjelica Selden of Vanden High in
Fairfield was named by CalHiSports.com as the 2004 Ms. Softball
State Player of the Year. Selden, who is headed to UCLA this year,
had remarkable numbers during her high school career. As a senior
she set a national record with 10 consecutive no-hitters and
finished the season with 16 in addition to 563 strikeouts and a
0.03 ERA. She also batted .432 with six homers, 20 RBIs and 30
walks. In her career, she set a state record with an 0.06 ERA,

After splitting a pair of games to Australia in the FINA World
League, the U.S. Men’s National Team knocked off World and
Olympic Champion Hungary 11-9. Former Bruin Adam Wright scored two
goals in the contest, giving Hungary its third loss in league play
thus far. The victory, at Newport Beach’s Corona del Mar High
School, puts to ease Team USA’s memory of its 6-5 loss to
Hungary at the FINA World League Super Final in New York, N.Y. Team
USA will get another chance at Hungary when they lock heads
Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex, La Jolla,
Calif.
AWARD WINNING COLLEGE: This past week’s
Sports Illustrated named California as the greatest sports state.
With that said, UCLA (25 percent) topped Stanford (16 percent) and
California (14 percent) for California’s favorite
college.
