Ex-Bruin to play arena football

Former UCLA wide receiver Brian Poli-Dixon joined the New
Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League on Tuesday. Poli-Dixon
was one of five free agents that the Voodoo signed during the
off-season along with a host of key players re-signed to contracts.
“I am very excited about the quality of players that we have
been able to retain from last year’s team and the ones that
we have been able to add,” VooDoo coach Mike Neu said.
Poli-Dixon, who played for the Bruins from 1998-2001, was signed by
the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2002 and
worked out with the San Francisco 49ers this past summer. During
his career at UCLA, Poli-Dixon racked up 139 receptions for 2,127
yards and 20 touchdowns.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY DROPS OFF: After
placing seventh last season in the NCAA tournament, the
women’s cross country team finds itself at No. 25 in the
nation this week. The Bruins will try to scale back up the national
rankings this Saturday at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The
women’s 6K race will start at 9:30 a.m. and the men’s
8K competition begins at 8:30 a.m.

GUY RETURNS: Former Bruin baseball player Guy
Hansen, who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1969, will
make his way back home to his major league roots this week as a
pitching coach for the Royals. Hansen served as a pitching coach
for the Royals for three years from 1991-1993, and spent the last
four seasons as a pitching coach for the Richmond Braves. Earlier
in his career, Hansen also scouted players and is recognized in
having part in signing Bret Saberhagen, Kevin Appier and Cecil
Fielder.
