SDSU will join Pac-10 men's soccer

Head coaches in conference recommend move to add sixth
team
n the Pac-10 as an affiliate member in men’s
soccer, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The Aztecs will
join California, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA and Washington in a
conference that currently has four schools ranked in the top 25 in
the country. The conference’s council approved the move
earlier this week after receiving recommendations from head coaches
in the Pac-10.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: Sophomore Daniela Bercek
won her first-round match at the Riviera/ITA 7-5, 6-3 over
Alabama’s Robin Stephenson. Bercek will face a familiar
opponent in Megan Bradley, the second seed, in her second-round
match today. Last year, Bercek defeated Bradley in an epic
three-set match that propelled the Bruins into the semifinals. UCLA
freshman Riza Zalameda lost her first-round match to
Stanford’s Erin Burdette 7-6 (7), 5-7, 7-6 (4). Bercek and
Zalameda are also entered in the doubles draw of the tournament.
Duke junior Jackie Carleton, who transferred from UCLA in the
off-season, lost to Stanford’s Theresa Logar 6-4, 6-4.

SOFTBALL: UCLA women’s softball players
continue to make headlines. First their gold medal experience in
the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and now five Bruins will join 11
players for Team USA in the first World University Games for
Softball, held between October 26-31, in Plant City, Fla.
UCLA’s Caitlin Benyi, Lisa Dodd, Andrea Duran, Jodie Legaspi
and Emily Zaplatosch will compete against a pool of ten other
countries. Jay Miller, coach of Mississippi State, will lead the
team at the helm in a double-header first against Japan at 2:30
p.m. and then Chinese Taipei at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct.26.

MEN’S TENNIS: Three of UCLA’s
men’s players entered the Icy Hot ITA All-American
Championships in Tennessee. Alberto Francis is the only Bruin still
remaining in the draw and will face fifth-seeded Izak Van Der Merwe
of Old Dominion in the quarterfinals. Kris Kwinta lost his first
round match to Minnesota’s Avery Ticer 6-4, 6-4. Chris Lam
also lost his first-round match, falling to ninth-seeded Mark Van
Elden of Oklahoma State 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Jill Ellis is one win
away from recording her 100th win as coach of UCLA. Ellis currently
has a 99-21-5 record in her five-plus years with the Bruins. The
Bruins and Ellis will get two cracks at breaking that landmark this
weekend at home when UCLA faces Oregon State on Friday and then
Oregon on Sunday.
