Top Huskies volleyball player undergoes surgery

Washington women’s volleyball outside hitter Sanja
Tomasevic will likely be sidelined for four to five weeks after
sustaining a hand injury at practice last Thursday. The senior, who
leads the top-ranked Huskies in almost all statistical categories,
underwent surgery on Friday to repair two metacarpal bones in her
right hand. She may miss the November match-up against UCLA in
Seattle. “I’m sad that I got hurt, but this time off
will allow some of my other nagging injuries to heal before the
postseason,” Tomasevic told the Seattle Times. “I know
I’m in good hands with my doctors, and I’m anxious to
heal and get back on the court.” Tomasevic is in the top
three in the Pac-10 in kills, service aces and points and was a
second-team All-American selection last season. The Huskies won
their first two matches without her, sweeping the Arizona schools
this past weekend.

FOOTBALL: The initial BCS rankings will be
released today. The revised formula places additional weight on the
Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today poll while minimizing the other
computer formulas. USC is projected to be the top-ranked team,
while Cal is expected to beNo. 8, according to ESPN.

BASKETBALL: Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban
will be a keynote speaker at the first annual Billboard Digital
Entertainment Conference & Awards. The event will be hosted at
UCLA’s Tom Bradley International Center and the Grand Horizon
Ballroom at Covel Commons Nov. 4-5.

TENNIS: The Bruins will compete in the ITA
Regionals this week. The men’s tournament, held in Malibu,
begins Thursday and runs through Monday. The women’s
tournament is held at the same time and will be played at the
Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
