No. 4 amateur will join UCLA team; men’s
golf’s blue team finishes 15th The defending
champion UCLA women’s golf team isn’t standing pat on
top of the collegiate golf world. According to The Los Angeles
Times, Jane Park of Rancho Cucamonga, winner of the 2004 U.S.
Women’s Amateur Championship, verbally committed to UCLA on
Monday. Park is ranked the No. 4 amateur in all of the United
States according to Golfweek magazine. Her commitment continues a
recent trend of coach Carrie Forsyth, luring some of the best young
golfers to Westwood.
MEN’S GOLF: UCLA’s Blue Team,
composed of the non-regular starters, finished 15th at the Wolf
Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., with a 36-hole score of 30-over par.
The third and final round was scheduled to be played yesterday, but
was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Sophomore Joakim
Renstrom was the low scorer for the Bruins, tying for 40th by
shooting four-over par for the two days. Lamar University, which
posted a score of 12-under par, was declared the winner.
UCLA’s Pac-10 rival, Oregon State, finished second at seven
shots back, while Nevada took third. The Blue Team will compete in
the Santa Clara University Invitational next week. Meanwhile, the
Gold Team, which features UCLA’s regular starters, will
travel to the Pac-10/Big-10 challenge next week in Bandon, Ore.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Lewis University
announced on Monday it is forfeiting its 2003 national championship
after determining that two of its international players, Gustavo
Meyer and Jose Martins, were deemed ineligible. Meyer and Martins
sat out last season, and coach Dave Deuser was forced to resign
because of the scandal. The self-imposed sanctions include
forfeiture of all the team’s wins that season, a decision not
to participate in postseason competition in 2005, and a reduction
of athletic aid in the future. Lewis has also imposed a temporary
ban on actively recruiting international student-athletes for this
year. This is the second national championship in the sport that
has been returned in the past three years. Hawaii forfeited its
title in 2002 after it was revealed that one of its players had
played professionally.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Forward Bristyn Davis,
who scored three goals in less than two and a half minutes during
UCLA’s 5-1 victory over No. 7 Washington Sunday, was named to
the Soccer America Team of the Week. It is the sophomore’s
first selection to the team.
