The UCLA swimming and diving team kicked off its season with a
156-98 victory over UC Santa Barbara and a 149-108 win over Oregon
State. The Bruins are a now combined 25-0 all-time against the two
schools. Junior Kim Vandenberg won three events, taking first in
the 200 meter freestyle (1:50.29), 50m freestyle (24.01) and 100m
butterfly (55.09.) The Bruins took five of the top seven spots in
the 200m freestyle. Sophomore Jane Imagane captured the two
distance races, winning the 1000m freestyle (9:59.21) and 500m
freestyle (4:51.08). Junior Liz Keating placed second in the 1000m
freestyle (10:16.79). Freshman Chiemi Yamamo also claimed victories
in the 200m breaststroke (2:19.49) and 400m individual medley
(4:23.81). Other young Bruins had standout days as well. Sophomore
Katie Arnold (100m backstroke, 57.17), freshman Nicolette Teo (100m
breaststroke, 1:04.27) and sophomore Courtney Iversen (200m
backstroke, 2:03.80) all won individual races. Bruin swimmers
finished in each of the top four spots in the 200m backstroke. The
Bruin 200m medley relay team of Arnold, Teo, Vandenberg and Kellin
Chatfield won their race with a time of 1:45.10. The Bruin swimmers
will go to West Lafayette, Ind. in two weeks for the Purdue
Invitational. Meanwhile, the divers will open their season at USC
on Nov. 7 at the Trojan Invitational.
CROSS COUNTRY: The women’s cross country
team won its first meet of the season at the Cal State Fullerton
Titan Open on Friday. The Bruins scored 52 points, finishing
thirteen points ahead of second place UCI. Junior Lori Mann led the
Bruins, placing sixth overall (18:14.7). Sophomore Emily Haigh
finished one spot and one second behind her. Leslie Barrie rounded
out the trio of Bruins finishing in the top-10, placing 10th
(18:25.1). “It was a great team effort from Lori, Leslie and
Emily,” coach Eric Peterson said in a statement. “It
was nice to get our first team victory of the season.”
Peterson opted to rest his top runners on Saturday, giving them a
chance to train for the Pac-10 Championships next weekend.
“We ran these six athletes with the idea that our leader
would take the sixth and final spot on the roster for our squad at
the Pac-10 meet, and that will be Lori Mann,” Peterson said.
Ashley Allen (13th, 18:29.2), Allie Bohannon (23rd, 18:58.1) and
Jenny Esser (28th, 19:06) also took part in the race. Cal Coast
Track Club won the men’s meet, and UC Santa Barbara was the
top finishing collegiate team, placing second. UCLA did not
participate in the meet. The Bruins will head to the Pac-10
Championships next weekend.
HOCKEY: UCLA picked up three road victories
over the weekend. The Bruins defeated Washington 10-2 on Friday and
then 8-3 on Saturday. They followed up those wins with a 12-1
victory over Puget Sound on Sunday. Marty Galstyan scored 10 goals
during the weekend. The Bruins are now 3-1 in Pac-8 play and will
continue conference play in two weeks against Stanford.
