Men's golf team scores at Pac-10/Big-10 challenge

UCLA’s Gold Team, comprised of the regular starters,
captured first place after the first round of the Pac-10/Big-10
Challenge, which features seven teams from each conference that
compete in both normal tournament and team challenge scoring. The
Bruins shot a 291 on Monday and hold a five-stroke lead over
Arizona State. USC and Northwestern were tied for third at 298,
while Washington shot a 301. Rain has shortened the tournament to
36 holes and the teams are expected to complete the final round
tomorrow. So far, all five of the Bruins are in the top 20 on the
leaderboard. Senior John Poucher led the pack,
tying for fourth place with an even par 72. Meanwhile, UCLA’s
Blue team, composed of the non-regular starters, will be at the
Silver Creek Valley Country Club starting today for the 54-hole
Santa Clara Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University.
WOMEN’S GOLF: The third-ranked women’s
golf team is in Hawaii for the Kent Youle Invitational. The Bruins
have won this tournament twice in recent years, but are still
looking for their first victory of this season. UCLA’s entire
team will play the Kapolei course, a par-72, 6,139 yard course
located near the University of Hawaii. Five golfers’ scores
will count toward the team score, while the other two will have
theirs counted toward individual stroke play.

MEN’S TENNIS: UCLA came out of the
Wilson/ITA Regionals with a clean sweep. Sophomore Benjamin
Kohlloeffel
captured the singles title Monday, defeating
San Diego State’s Armando Carrascosa 6-1,
6-1 in the final. Kohlloeffel, who redshirted last year, did not
drop a set throughout the six matches, even though he was not
seeded. In doubles, top-seeded Alberto Francis and
Kris Kwinta played up to their expectations. In
the finals, the duo knocked off second-seeded Roger
Matalonga
and Colin O’Grady of
Arizona, 8-4. The victories qualify the three Bruins for the ITA
National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: Riza
Zalameda
beat fellow freshman Lindsey
Nelson
of USC 6-3, 6-4 in Monday’s championship
match at the Wilson/ITA Fall Regionals in San Diego. Zalameda
dropped just one set en route to the championship. She followed up
the singles win with her second title of the tournament, teaming
with sophomore Daniela Bercek to win the doubles
event. The pair defeated Arizona State’s Joslynn
Burkett
and Wendy Pilecka 8-3 in the
finals. Winners in each event qualify for a spot at the ITA
National Indoor Championships, held at the same time and location
as the men’s tournament.
