Softball Team USA 3-1 at world championships

Team USA Elite improved to a 3-1 record at the World University
Softball Championships in Florida on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over
Australia and a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands. UCLA sophomore
Jodie Legaspi homered in the fifth inning against
the Netherlands to give Team USA a 1-0 lead. Junior Andrea
Duran
padded the lead with a sacrifice fly the same
inning. Duran also led Team USA in its 3-0 win over Japan on
Tuesday. Duran went 2-for-4 in that game and scored a run off of a
Legaspi single in the fifth inning. Team USA’s only loss in
the tournament was a 3-2 setback to Chinese Taipei on Tuesday. The
team is currently tied for second in pool play and will face Canada
and China on Friday.

FOOTBALL: The NCAA placed Mississippi
State’s football program on a four-year probation because of
recruiting violations involving former assistant coaches and
boosters between 1998 and 2002. The school has been stripped of
eight scholarships over the next two seasons and is prevented from
participating in post-season play this year. The news comes as a
setback to a program that celebrated its first SEC win of the
season, an upset over Florida. But the school was expecting
sanctions to be imposed, and it was more of a matter of when, not
if, they would come down.

MEN’S SOCCER: Sophomore forward Chad
Barrett was named Pac-10 player of the week on Tuesday. He scored
two goals and had one assist during UCLA’s sweep of Cal and
Stanford last weekend, including the game-winning goal against the
Cardinals. Barrett becomes the second Bruin to win the award this
year and the 20th in the program’s history. Senior Mike
Enfield won the award the previous week.
