The truth sometimes hurts
I was very impressed by an article written by Hector Leano that
I recently read. I think it gave a true and ruthless depiction of
surfer posers and what real surfing is really about. His use of
metaphors vividly portrayed his points, and in the process, painted
an entertaining and humorous picture of life in Southern
California. While some of the writing seemed muted, no doubt the
product of the editor and not the writer, the no-holds-bar writing
was refreshing. Some people need a kick to the head, and this
writer wasn’t afraid to dish it out.

Finally someone understands us
It’s about time someone said what Hector Leano said in his
article, “Surfer image lacks reality.” I’m so
sick of how the idea of surfing has changed and how it has lost its
essence. I purposely don’t tell people I surf because
I’m afraid they have a sick and twisted idea of what surfing
really is. Believe it or not, it is more than Rainbow sandals and a
bad-ass story of how you dropped into a 10-foot wave. Thanks for
the great humor and dose of reality.

Don’t bash one of your own
If I wanted to read about an L.A.-based “journalist”
making fun of UCLA football, I’d read T.J. Simers ““ who
is probably one of your heroes (in response to Gilbert
Quiñonez’s “Bruins don’t deserve top-25
vote”).
I don’t expect any writer to be praising UCLA football
now, simply because the Bruins aren’t getting it done.
But I also don’t expect to see one of our own trashing a
program that is striving to improve and get back to the top of the
Pac-10. I hope you got a chuckle out of your article, because
you’re probably the only one who did.
Something tells me you’ve never played a single down of
tackle football. I’d pay good money to watch Jarrad Page and
Spencer Havner use you as a tackling dummy. You should be ashamed
to call yourself a Bruin.
