Bruins grab first in golf tournament

The UCLA men’s golf team captured first place at The
Prestige at PGA West yesterday in La Quinta, firing a team total of
40-over par in the three-round tournament. The Bruins, who trailed
by one stroke after the first 36 holes of play, shot a collective
10-over par in the final round to finish nine strokes ahead of
second-place UC Davis. “It felt great to win,” coach
O.D. Vincent said. “The golf course was difficult and the
conditions for the first 36 holes were really tough, but the team
just survived.” Freshman Daniel Im led the Bruins, finishing
in eighth place at 8-over par. Senior John Poucher (13-over) tied
for 13th, freshman Kevin Chappell (14-over) tied for 19th, freshman
Peter Campbell (16-over) tied for 28th, sophomore Chris Heintz
(20-over) tied for 39th, and sophomore Joakim Renstrom (29-over)
tied for 66th. Former Bruins Parker McLachlin and John Merrick have
joined 2004 graduate Travis Johnson in advancing to the second
stage of PGA TOUR Qualifying School. Both golfers advanced by
finishing high enough at their respective sites. McLachlin tied for
second at Dayton Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Nev., posting a
four-day score of 10-under par. Merrick, meanwhile, placed fourth
at San Juan Oaks in Hollister firing a four-day score of 12-under
par. Players will be sent to various sites across the country for
the second round of qualifying.

Rowing will enter five squads in Saturday’s
race
ROWING: The Bruins will enter two
Varsity Eight Squads and three Novice Eight Squads at the Head of
the Marina this Saturday at Marina Del Rey in the 5000-meter
course. In the same event last year, the two Bruin varsity crews
finished first and tied for second, respectively. The team will
travel to Newport Beach Sunday for the Newport Autumn Rowing
Festival, where two varsity and one novice crew will compete. The
Bruins finished seventh and 13th at the varsity level last year
while the novice crew placed first.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Washington will be
missing four of its top players in its season opener against
Seattle Pacific on November 19. Senior guards Will Conroy and Tre
Simmons, as well as junior forwards Bobby Jones and Jamaal Williams
were suspended for participating in unsanctioned summer basketball
programs in Seattle, Wash.
