The UCLA women’s swimming team defeated the University of
San Diego 168-85 on Friday, improving its season record to 3-0. The
Bruins dominated the meet, winning 12 of the 14 events with senior
Lindsey Smart and sophomore Courtney Iversen leading the way. Smart
won three events ““ the 100-meter and 200m backstrokes and the
100m butterfly ““ while Iversen won another two ““ the
200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke. Liz Keating, Nicolette Teo,
Jeana Fuccillo, Katie Arnold and Katie Nelson won individual races
as well for the Bruins. The Bruin relay teams rounded out the 12
first-place finishes with victories in the 200m medley and 200m
freestyle. UCLA kicks off its Pac-10 season this weekend with home
meets against Arizona State and Arizona.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The Bruins swept UC Irvine 30-28, 30-25,
30-19 Saturday at Pauley Pavilion, finishing off their exhibition
season a perfect 5-0. Quick-hitter Allan Vince recorded 11 kills
(.556), outside hitter Jonathan Acosta added 10 (.333) and Paul
Johnson, Steve Klosterman and Damien Scott each had eight to lead
the Bruins, who hit .414 in the match. Setter Julio Acevedo
recorded 42 assists on the night and libero Tony Ker led both teams
with 14 digs. The Bruins still have one match remaining prior to
the regular season, an exhibition match against British Columbia at
Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 29.
