In its season opener, the UCLA women’s basketball team
will head to Florida to face Texas Christian University in the
first round of the Miami Jam on Friday, Nov. 19 at the Convocation
Center. The Bruins will be tested against a TCU squad that made it
into the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. TCU
senior forward, Sandora Irvin, who averaged 16.8 points, 12.2
rebounds and 3.9 blocked shots per game last year, should allow the
Bruins to gauge how their frontcourt will stack up this season. The
second round of the tournament will be played on Sunday with the
consolation game played at 12:00 p.m. and the championship game at
2:00 p.m. UCLA is 21-9 all-time in season openers.
MEN’S SOCCER: UCLA sophomore midfielder
Patrick Ianni was named the Pac-10 Men’s Soccer Co-Player of
the Year after being part of a Bruin defense that only allowed a
league tying 15 goals in the Pac-10. This year’s Bruin
defense also recorded eight shutouts and only allowed single digit
shots in 11 games. Coach Jorge Salcedo received Co-Coach of the
Year honors. In his first year at the helm, Salcedo coached UCLA to
a 13-3-2 overall record, a third consecutive conference title, and
a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Defenders Brandon Owens and
Marvell Wynne have been selected to the U.S. Under-20 Men’s
National Team. The U-20 National team will face Honduras Friday,
Nov. 19 and Mexico on Sunday, Nov. 21 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Owens, a sophomore, and Wynne, a freshman, will only participate in
the tournament’s first game against Honduras because they
will need to return for the Bruins’ second round NCAA
Tournament match the same weekend.
