Letters to the sports desk

Bruins have a responsibility to stick
together

Regardless of who wins this Saturday’s football game, the
real losers will be Derek Lazzaro and Daily Bruin Editorial
staff.

There is nothing more deplorable in sports ““ or in life,
for that matter ““ than sacrificing one’s integrity to
be on the winning side. As students and alumni of UCLA, we have a
social obligation to root for our sports teams; or, at the very
least, not actively support USC in the school-wide newspaper.

School ties should trump blood lines

In response to Derek Lazzaro’s “Campus Spirit Fails
to Impress” (Dec. 2), I have a few things to say.

First, much of the lack of school spirit has to do with the fact
that our football stadium is 45 minutes away from campus. You
seriously can’t expect there to be a huge following for a
college sport where you need to drive 45 minutes just to get to the
stadium.

It’s no wonder USC fans are “partying till the sun
goes down.” They can consume large amounts of alcohol and
then simply walk five minutes to the Coliseum.

And then once they are inside, they can buy more beer, which by
the way, the Rose Bowl does not allow.

Second, you criticize the lack of school spirit, yet admit to
rooting for USC. You are contributing to the exact problem that you
are complaining about.

I don’t care if your grandfather has worked at USC for 50
years. My entire family also attended USC (mother, father, sister,
grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle … the list goes on).

But when UCLA plays USC, you root for your alma mater. You
should be ashamed to call yourself a Bruin.
