Letters to the sports desk

Water polo should get the glory

In Monday’s publication, it seems as though the Daily
Bruin thinks that losing a football game to a good team means more
than winning a Division I National Title. If we had defeated the
Trojans, than by all means, fill the whole newspaper from top to
bottom of play-by-play action, pictures and interviews; I would
like nothing better. Unfortunately, we did not beat USC.

Our men’s water polo team however, did win. A NATIONAL
TITLE, to be exact. Which means they are untouchable ““ the
best the country has seen this year ““ and like the team that
beat our football boys, No. 1. Granted, football has a much larger
following which attracts more readers, but when a member of the
Bruin family achieves the pinnacle of athletic success, for
goodness sakes, they should be the headline.

Unbiased coverage much appreciated

I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your article
“Football: Victory in defeat” (Dec. 6). I never
expected our team to come so close to winning this game, and if
that bad call didn’t happen in the first half, we might have
pulled it off.

Although I haven’t been happy with past football
reporters/groupies that did nothing but kiss ass to the players,
your article was spot-on (as was your “Tale of two
seasons”). You should continue to write in a more neutral
voice. Though the paper should be slightly biased toward its own
teams, it is not interesting to read about how great our teams are
when they are consistently losing.
