Charter school accused of negligence in sex
scandal

ORANGE, Calif. “”mdash; Charter school officials were warned
about the conduct of an English teacher before her arrest for
allegedly having sex with teenage students, according to the Orange
Unified School District superintendent.

The district is now investigating possible revocation of
Santiago Charter Middle School’s operating charter, accusing
school leaders of not protecting students from an abusive
teacher.

Superintendent Robert French said in a letter to school
directors that they were warned about teacher Sarah Bench-Salorio,
28, before her Jan. 4 arrest for investigation of having sex with
two 13-year-old boys.

Two days after the arrest, the district’s school board
ordered French to investigate whether the charter school had failed
to protect student safety.

Bank robberies decline locally

Continuing a decade-long trend, bank robberies have dropped
dramatically in the seven-county area under local FBI
jurisdiction.

Since the record 2,641 bank robberies in the region in 1992, the
number of bank robberies in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San
Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties has
steadily decreased to a low of 537 robberies last year.

“˜”˜The number hasn’t been that low since the
mid-1960s,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said
Wednesday. She attributed the trend to advancements in bank
security, increased cooperation among law enforcement agencies and
aggressive prosecution of suspects.
