High school editor punished for gay student
profiles

FULLERTON “”mdash; A top editor at Troy High School’s
newspaper was punished for profiling three gay students, violating
school and state education code rules that prohibit asking students
about their sexuality without parental permission.

Student Ann Long and her mother said high school officials told
the senior she must resign from her shared post as editor in chief
of the Oracle by Thursday or she will be fired.

Assistant principal Joseph D’Amelia, who allegedly
delivered the ultimatum, wouldn’t comment. He referred
callers to Patricia Howell, deputy superintendent for the Fullerton
Joint Union High School District.

Howell said Long, 18, was being punished for violating the
ethical standards of the journalism class and a state education
code that prohibits asking students about their sexuality without
parental permission.

CSU Hayward votes to change its school name

HAYWARD “”mdash; California State University, Hayward is doing a
little name-dropping, much to city officials’ chagrin.

CSU’s governing board of trustees on Wednesday unanimously
approved a proposal to rename the campus California State
University, East Bay.

Campus president Norma Rees told a committee of the board
Tuesday the new name is a better fit because the institution has
facilities in nearby Oakland and Concord.
