Irvine chancellor appointed to academy
IRVINE “”mdash; University of California Irvine Chancellor Ralph
Cicerone has been elected president of the National Academy of
Sciences.
Cicerone will start his new job in Washington, D.C., on July 1,
leaving the university after 16 years.
Following the announcement of Cicerone’s appointment
Monday, UC President Robert C. Dynes said he had named a search
committee to find a new chancellor and hoped to have a
recommendation for the system’s governing Board of Regents by
late spring. Cicerone, an atmospheric chemist, has headed the
Irvine campus since 1998. He also holds the Daniel G. Aldrich Jr.
Chair position in earth system science and is a chemistry
professor.
Irvine students petition the Justice
Department
IRVINE “”mdash; More than 400 students and faculty signed a
petition opposing a decision asking the author of a Justice
Department memo on torture to speak as a
“˜”˜chancellor’s distinguished fellow”
at UC Irvine.
Opponents didn’t want administrators to cancel the visit
of John Yoo, formerly a U.S. Justice Department lawyer and now a UC
Berkeley law professor. It’s the distinguished fellow honor
they oppose.
