One day after UCLA women’s golf coach Carrie Forsyth
implored her team to extend its lead at the Regional challenge, the
Bruins made a move on the leader board.
In the wrong direction.
Holding a four-shot lead going into Tuesday’s second
round, UCLA struggled mightily at Palos Verdes Golf Club, shooting
a combined 20-over par and now stand at 25-over par as a team after
two rounds.
The Bruins currently find themselves in a tie for second place,
one shot behind No. 9 Pepperdine entering today’s third and
final round.
While most golfers on the course saw their score increase from
the first round, senior Charlotte Mayorkas reversed the trend.
After shooting a disappointing 3-over par 74 to open up the
spring season, the Bruin leader stormed back into contention on
Tuesday, firing an even-par 71, which was tied for low round in the
afternoon.
Mayorkas currently sits at a tie for second place at 3-over par,
five shots behind Duke’s Brittany Lang (2-under par).
Though Mayorkas navigated through the course relatively
unharmed, posting three birdies against three bogeys, her fellow
Bruin teammates did not escape unscathed.
After Mayorkas’ 71, the next lowest score posted by a
Bruin on Tuesday was junior Susie Mathews’ 5-over par 76.
In a tie for third place after one round, sophomore Hannah Jun
posted a 6-over par 76 but still finds herself in the top-10 in a
tie for eighth (6-over par).
Meanwhile, Amie Cochran and Vanessa Brockett, UCLA’s two
freshmen, shot matching 80s in the second round.
Despite a higher-than-expected collective score on Tuesday, the
Bruins still find themselves in a good position to defend the title
they won a year ago at Palos Verdes.
UCLA will tee off this morning at 8:30 a.m. and will be playing
with the two teams it’s competing with for the title: No. 1
Duke and Pepperdine.
