Small explosion reported at Strathmore
Building

University police received a report of a small explosion at the
Strathmore Building on Thursday afternoon, though police found no
evidence that an explosion had actually occurred.

The police received a phone call at 1:26 p.m. saying there had
been a small explosion at the basement level of the Strathmore
Building, said Sgt. Russel McKinney.

Firefighters and police responded to the phone call and were
unable to locate any cause for the noise.

“There are no indications that there was an explosion or
an explosive device at that site,” McKinney said.

The building was not evacuated. Workers at the basement level
evacuated themselves when the noise occurred, McKinney said.

There were no injuries.

LAX police and LAPD: to merge, or not to
merge

Voters will apparently decide whether to merge the Los Angeles
International Airport police with the LAPD.

The City Council on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to
asking voters on May 17 to remove a provision from the City Charter
that prohibits the 328-officer airport police force from merging
with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Members of the Los Angeles Police Officers Association said they
will fight the proposal. Airport police Chief Bernard Wilson also
objected to the proposal, calling it an overreaction to negative
publicity surrounding his force.
